2.Brief Course Introduction

British Literature is a compulsory course for the sophomore students of the Department of English in the third semester that aims to provide general knowledge of British literature. It acts as an entry point to the history of British literature in terms of major historical events and their impact on the literary development. By examining British literature in different periods, it studies the important British writer and their representative works, especially the Elizabeth dramas, the Romantic poetry and the Victorian novels. Emphasis is given to the students' reading and discussion throughout. On completion of this course, students will obtain the general knowledge of British social and literary events, develop some insight into the important British writers and their representative works and cultivated taste  as well as their vision of life.
