2. A Brief Introduction to the Course

Digital Cinematography and Editing is designed to provide students majoring in digital media art with an expansive look and intensive practices concerning the diverse methods and concepts in cinematography and editing. This course has a focus on technical and creative approaches including various cinematographic skills and their variation. The methodology of this subject is greatly based on the practice-led education model. It covers playwriting, cinematic techniques and approaches in shot, edit, light, design and etc. The nature of this course also features several in-depth reading and analysis of various directors’ works and styles. In this vein, students are encouraged to learn from their practice and review through the standard of established directors’ works.

It is become evident that cinematography is everywhere in our daily life. Academic education of cinematography seems obsolete under the trend of mobile cinematographic gadget. The increasing popularity of apps allowing shooting and editing makes cinematography easier than ever before. However, we also witness the regression of the skills of telling story while computer graphics (CG) become the main character of lots of film. It begs a question of “what can we do in the academic system aiming to educate students in a way that constructing the ideas through three sets of frameworks: narrative and corresponding visual presentation, practice and research, gist and logic.

During this course, students will team up and conduct their self-directed projects, employing theories and techniques learned from classes. Students will go through a journey of studying, working, prototype-reviewing, reworking and presentation. It is also important to note that all students’ final works need to be broadcasted online in order to be viewed by common viewers. Though the popularity will not be regarded as the essential in marking, it is nevertheless the evidence and reflection of the public ideology of this society in our times.
