2. A Brief Introduction to the Course
On the basis of Design-Based Research (DBR) educational methodology, the purpose of Fundamentals of Design is to enable students to learn the basics of multiple DESIGN as a general term associated with creative industry(product design, graphic design and etc.), which is a new way of thinking/thought-mapping(user-oriented design, food design and etc.), or a more innovative idea to reconsider a given society/region/nation/globe as a great scale subject of design(social innovative design, environmental design and etc.). In this course, students are encouraged to develop problem-solving skills through actual design practices. Students will develop the ability of visual communication through drawing, 2D and 3D basic computer graphics creating and actual model making (carpentry).
Throughout the period of weekly material experiments, research and workshops, students would not only deepen their knowledge of DESIGN, but improve their ability to cooperate with other interest groups under interdisciplinary principles of design. By these means, several important design inquiries will be often asked in this semester, such as “What is design?, “What can/not be designed?” , “How we conduct design research through practice? ,or “How are we associated with design in terms of history, culture and economics?” After a 16-week course study, we will find the answers of the above-mentioned questions through actual design practice and cross-boundary study in order to understand today’s qualitative transformation of DESIGN.
