2.Brief Course Introduction

Development and Management of Non-profit Organizations is one of the basic courses that are required for the students of Public Administration in the Guangdong University of Finance and Economics.
 Non-profit organizations are the newest and fastest growing sector in China with thenumber tenfolding during the last 25 years. In addition to a growth innumbers, nonprofit organizations have become increasingly complex entities influencingpublic policy, participating in community affairs, and forging partnership with private andpublic organizations. With increased growth and complexity, a significant need has emergedfor sophisticated managers with organizational acumen, technical skills, and an in-depthunderstanding of what it means to work in the non-profit world.
 This course covers the fundamentals of non-profit administration including distinctivecharacteristics of the non-profit sector, thehistorical development, role in contemporary society, and economic and political dimensionsof contemporary nonprofit organizations, as well as administrative issues including regulation,governance, and organizational management. This course also examines similarities anddifferences between profit and nonprofit organizations, major management issuesspecifically associated with non-profits, such as marketing, fundraising and human resources. Particular emphasis will be placed upon such normative concerns as missiondevelopment and reform strategies.
