2. Course Description

Sociology of development is an interdisciplinary subject of development studies and sociology, which studies normal patterns of development and development issues in developing countries. This course, a compulsory one for sociology major students, mainly introduces students to the historical development, research objects, subject characteristics, different schools and research methods of sociology of development. This course will focus on some key concepts including economic growth, social differentiation, urbanization, secularization, democratization and intellectualization, together with diverse outlooks on development and their concrete examples such as the modernization of China and the world. Students taking the course will acquire an understanding of the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics, as well as learn to apply their theoretical knowledge to the study on concrete issues of development in China.
