Teaching Objectives
The course A Guide to British and American Literary Classics aims to deepen the understanding of British and American literary classics, and cultivate the capability of the postgraduates in analyzing the literary texts. Through lectures and discussions in a semester, efforts should be made to achieve a good level of analyzing skills in reading classic literary texts, to analyze them by close reading and application of literary theory, and to write critical papers with a literary approach.
Teaching Contents
This course starts from clarification of the Classic concept, introduces some representative literary works from Great Britain from the Renaissance and American literature from the time of Romanticism, works which are considered by literary historians to be classics, and focuses on reading and analyzing these literary texts: also selected reading of British drama, Romantic poetry, modern novels and essay writing.
