Teaching Objectives
This course is designed to introduce basic theories, methodology in contrastive linguistics, comparison and translation between English and Chinese, which acquaints learners with a systemic knowledge of the above, and the contrastive dimensions between English and Chinese languages and cultures through case studies in English-Chinese or Chinese- English translated texts, and the differences and similarities between the original text and the target text.
Teaching Contents
This course is mainly aimed at introducing basic theories, methodology in contrastive linguistics, comparison and translation between English and Chinese, making contrastive/comparative studies through classical cases of English -Chinese or Chinese-English translated texts such Chinese- English versions as: The Book of Changes,The Analects of Confucius, The Great Learning, Hao Qiu Zhuan: the Fortune Union, Six Chapters of A Floating Life (Trans. By Lin Yutang), and English- Chinese vesions as Evolution and Ethnics (Trans. By Yan Fu), Uncle Tom's Cabin (Trans. By Lin Shu), David Copperfield (Trans. By Lin Shu), Pride and Prejudice, Tess of the Dp Urbervilles, The Old Man and the Sea, and A Collection of Foreign Short Stories (Trans. By Zhou Zuoren and Zhou Shuren),  translation of Poems, translating-out of modern Chinese literature, etc.
