2. A Brief Introduction to the Course

    Basics of Design is a compulsory course for students majoring in advertisement in university. According to the needs of the planning theme, the course teaches how to make a graphic arrangement of the visual elements (pictures, titles, text, and etc.) in information transmission so that a readable and novel information body can be presented. After learning, students are expected to master the ability of layout design, and can make reasonable use of aesthetic principles to beautify and transform the layout, so as to realize the perfect combination of “art and practice”.

It is also hoped that students can master the visual elements and constituent elements conveyed in the design, the relationship between the content and the form of the layout design, the design elements and their constituent laws and methods, as well as the form characteristics of various applied designs. In this case, students can carry out an infectious layout design so that the works can be conveyed to the readers in a clearer and orderly way. Through studying the layout design methods and procedures, students are able to understand the basic knowledge of pre-press, master the design and production technology and methods of various layout designs, which in turn will lay a good foundation for future graphic design, advertising design, new media and display design. Therefore, the course is of great practical value. The purpose of this course is to enable students with the ability of mastering the correct method of layout, owning practical application ability and strong design performance, and ultimately being qualified to be advertising designers.

Basics of Design stands at a superior place in the art disciplinary of advertising, functioning as the foundation to connection and to key. By studying the course, it is expected to lay the foundation for other professional design courses, such as Packaging Design, New Media Advertising Design, UI Design, Brand Visual Design and so on. Furthermore, students are encouraged to cultivate problem-based design through real design practice, so that their attention can be paid to emotional needs design and software application.

The course will mainly enable students to get involved into the weekly-used material, research, design practice, so that students can have an in-depth understanding and optimization of design. At the same time, the campus environment can be used as a place for curriculum practice, where students can understand the social design expression through practical work and user feedback. This course aims to build a bridge between the application of advertising science, hoping to form a smooth thinking channel for the transformation between behavior and thought, past and the present. During the course, the actual cases produced by excellent designers will be selected to analyze the thinking process of the design and its final presentation. By these means, the content, significance, form and technology of advertising design can be explored.
